Being a creative coach

One of the most important values I want to support in my work is creativity. I want to support it in others, and I want my work to be a vehicle for my creativity, too.
Here's how artfulness and creativity show up for me.
I love to find unexpected or overlooked beauty in ordinary moments. If I fall behind when we walk together, it's most likely because I'm absorbed in something I've found and taking a closer look at. I use this close attention to provide insight in my coaching conversations.
I like to experiment. I'll have something I'm curious about or have in mind and will try different ways to understand it better. I keep the stakes low, if I can, so it's okay when things don't quite work out. Shelling my eggs every week is a chance to experiment and laugh when the eggs get mangled.
I like to work with my hands. Making things lets me disconnect from technology and calm my mind. The repetitive nature of crafting is meditative. And, it's so satisfying to hold something tangible that I or someone else has made.
Ways that I incorporate artfulness and creativity in my coaching:
Drawing is an important mode of expression for me. Often, the quickest way to convey an idea is with a sketch. I use diagrams or pictures where they can help achieve a better understanding.
Art is part of my reflective process. Sometimes it's hard to start to describe all the thoughts and feelings with words. A drawing or diagram helps me get what I'm thinking paper, and from there I can find words to create a more linear structure. So incorporating art activities is an important part of my coaching approach. I use artful activities that support the reflection process.
I'm comfortable trusting the creative process. Sometimes, you can't predict how things will turn out. I trust that the process of working on something will reveal not only the answers, but the right questions to ask along the way.
I understand the feeling of being compelled to express something through working with your hands, the drive that keeps you drawing and tinkering, over days, weeks, months, maybe years. I know what it's like to have a vision for how things could be and to work steadily to realize that vision. That's why I'm committed to helping other creatives express their creativity ways that align with their values.
